The Truth About Wedding Vows

Custom vows versus traditional vows, and why taking the time to write your own vows is worth it.

“I attended one wedding where the groom used lyrics from different songs as his wedding vows. The bride was shocked too.”

Let's face it. Some of us could write our wedding vows in our sleep.

Then there are others who dread the idea of not only writing their own vows, but saying them out loud -- especially in front of their family and friends.

The choice to write your own personal vows and ditching traditional vows in which you recite a centuries-old pledge can be a tough decision for some couples.

“But one word or line -- shaky hands or mumbling of words -- can leave your officiant, friends, family and even vendors feeling uncomfortable and awkward. "

The thing is, personal vows can cultivate a more intimate, warm wedding. With a little humor it can also help alleviate the stuffiness that some weddings can give off to guests.

But one word or line -- shaky hands or mumbling of words -- can leave your officiant, friends, family and even vendors feeling uncomfortable and awkward.

I attended one wedding where the groom used lyrics from different songs as his wedding vows. The bride was shocked too. A friend at another wedding told a joke that fell flat, even for her significant other. Those are moments that, unfortunately, will live rent-free in many minds for years to come.

You may be wondering -- why does it matter what the guests think? This promise is for my soon-to-be-spouse.

When delivered in a sincere, concise way -- personal wedding vows can draw in your wedding guests. Remember, you're spending hundreds, likely, thousands of dollars on your wedding because you want the most important people to witness a couple and their families come together. It's a celebration! Your wedding vows are an element of that day too.

The reason why so many choose to write their own vows is not only to pledge their love to their fiancé(e), but also to shout out to the world how much that person means to them.

Unfortunately, this is easier said than done for some people. But if your soon-to-be-husband/wife wants you both to write your own personal vows, and you're more hesitant -- remember it's one of the most romantic gestures you can do for him/her, and it can elevate the experience for your wedding guests if done right.

Who doesn't want to have a wedding -- or be that couple -- that everyone gushes over?
